Specializing in the Representation of Abused and Neglected Children
Travis A. Cushman’s legal career and path to protecting children began in 2002 after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate degree
from the University of Montana. After being admitted to the Montana State Bar, Travis began
his legal career prosecuting misdemeanor and felony criminal cases as a Missoula
County Attorney Intern.
Travis accepted an associate position as a civil litigator with a large, “A” rated, law firm in Great Falls, Montana. Within a few years, Travis left the civil practice and began serving as a public defender representing the indigent. Travis eventually opened his own practice and devoted a majority of his time to the representation of children both in state district and federal courts. His litigation experience and passion for advocating on behalf of abused and neglected children earned him a reputation of being a devoted professional in a difficult area of practice.
Travis A. Cushman has represented over 245 children in District Court in the State of Montana who were either abused or neglected. He has served as a special county prosecutor on behalf of Montana's Child Protection Unit and prosecuted those who were charged with abusing their children. Additionally Travis worked as an attorney guardian ad litem representing child victims in Federal District Court. He has also defended parents who were allegedly abusing their children.
In 2009, the Montana Supreme Court established a Uniform Dependency and Neglect Workgroup. Travis was invited to be in the group where he spoke on behalf of those who represented children around the State. The group is a multidisciplinary team made up of over a dozen different professionals. Their goal was to increase collaboration among stakeholders in dependency and neglect cases and improve the quality of professional practice statewide while conserving limited judicial resources.
Following his departure from the workgroup, Travis was encouraged by many of his professional peers to write a book detailing how participants of the abuse and neglect system can collectively help make the system better.
